Home Tyres Legal Requirements

PostHeaderIcon Legal Requirements

In the UK, the law states that the minimum legal tread of a tyre must be at least 1.6mm over 75% of the breadth of the tyre and around the whole circumference of the tyre.

Both under-inflated and over-inflated tyres have effect on your vehicles handling and fuel economy.

Under-inflated Tyres:

> Tend to flop at the edges providing uneven wear .
> Shortening the life of the tyre.
> Reduce fuel economy, handling & breaking.

Over-inflated Tyres:

> Have minimum contact with the road.
> Causes uneven wear in the centre of the tyre.
> Reduces grip & breaking distances.

If caught with illegal tread under 1.6mm tyres, the maximum penalty enforceable is £2,500 PER TYRE and 3 penalty points PER TYRE. If found to have all four tyres under the legal limit the total charge is £10,000 and 12 points (lost license due to toting up).

Why not bring your car in for a quick tyre check to keep yourself safe. The pressure settings can usually be found on the door sills or the booklet supplied with the car.
